For the 2010 report, the RSG research team has delved into what clients really think about the law firms they use and the way they see their legal needs evolving.

Over 50 law firm briefings, feedback from over 300 clients, 360 degree assessments, and empirical analysis of deal flows, legal spend, fees and remuneration make the new report an essential resource for anyone doing business in India or building an Indian legal practice.

A handle on legal India: Much more than an executive summary, this section of the report draws together the key findings from all our research with law firms and with clients over the past two years. It includes the RSG top 40 ranking and analysis, the paper on liberalisation, our fees and remuneration survey and the full paper on the value of the Indian legal market. The latter paper also includes an analysis of legal spend and estimated law firm turnover figures, never before published. The report will give both novice and seasoned lawyers interested in India insight into how the Indian legal market is developing.

Law firm briefings: individual briefings on over 50 Indian law firms. based on face to face interviews with firms, their peers and foreign firms. Client reviews were conducted via balanced scorecards and in-depth interviews. We measure availability, timeliness, budgeting, resources, expertise, added value services, conflicts innovation, pro-activity, commerciality, technology, value for money. In addition, the briefing has our analysis of the firm’s strategy, partnership structure and management, modernity and suitability as both a service provider and tie-up partner. We also include a selection of the top lawyers at each firm who have been vetted through the research process and selected information on the firms’ clients and work.

Second generation Indian lawyers: India is under-lawyered at the high-end of the commercial legal market. It can be difficult to get a hold of the key names. Here we select the new generation of legal leaders. RSG have identified and verified a list of 25 practitioners divided into 2 bands: lawyers who are over 35, and those of the future, who are under 35.

Inside India PLC: The client sectionCorporate India as purchasers of legal services is a rapidly developing but variegated market. Some Indian companies have huge internal legal teams operating as internal law firms, managed by powerful General Counsel. Others have no internal lawyers at all and decisions are made by the CEO. Here, RSG has drawn together feedback and research with over 300 companies active in India to produce an analysis of who the decision makers are and best routes of access, a full marketing advisory paper as to how best to build, maintain and grow an India practice, and desk research into the deal flows in and out of India with tables of the busiest corporates and busiest law firms from 2007-09.
