JSA and Amarchand top poll of legal advisers to India’s fastest growing companies

Our new briefing on 350 of India’s fastest growing companies is published today. RSG India’s ‘Inside India’s Fastest Growing Companies’ covers Indian public and private high-growth companies with an average turnover of almost half a billion US dollars and annual growth touching 100%.

Over 100 of the companies are in the technology sector and 60 of them have operations in the US - the most popular overseas jurisdiction for fast growing Indian companies.

As a part of the briefing, RSG has highlighted the companies that show both the potential and the appetite for overseas expansion and outward bound deal-making.

The briefing also gives an insight into the legal advisers to this ascending generation of TATAs and Reliances.

During our extensive research we interviewed executive directors and general counsel from the most promising of these fast growing companies. When asked to name their domestic legal advisers, J Sagar & Associates (JSA) and Amarchand & Mangaldas topped the list of responses.

This would suggest that the new order of Indian companies want to use the same legal advisers as their forebears. Amarchand ranked joint first and JSA ranked third in last year’s RSG Top 40. AZB & Partners, the other top law firm in the RSG ranking, was the third most cited domestic legal adviser in our interviews, alongside Kanga & Co (joint 16th in the RSG Top 40 2010).

When it comes to appointing an Indian law firm, the message from these fast growing companies is clear: reputation and expertise is everything.

But a popular criticism of Indian law firms is their lack of specialist expertise in areas such as IP, media and technology. Specialisation in these niche areas is evidently what many of these fast-growth companies want as their own horizons continue to expand overseas.

Other familiar names from the RSG rankings were also mentioned by the directors and GCs, such as Khaitan & Co, ALMT Legal and Crawford Bayley & Co. Equally, a number of smaller firms from outside the major cities received a mention.

The upcoming year promises to be another good earner for Indian law firms. Confidence in the economy is brimming over; revenues are projected to keep rising and – in some cases - triple-digit growth is expected to continue.
